Spokane’s annual 12K highlights community and the arrival of spring in the Lilac City
By Taylor Shillam
Spokane's renowned annual 12K race, Bloomsday, remains a vibrant testament to community spirit and a shared commitment to fitness. Since its inception in 1977, the iconic event, organized by the Lilac Bloomsday Association, has blossomed into a cherished tradition that draws thousands of participants to the heart of the Lilac City each May. More than just a fun run or a competition, Bloomsday’s enduring tradition reflects a powerful display of a community coming together, celebrating athleticism at all levels and the beautiful energy of Spokane.
Inspired by a national running boom and Spokane's post-Expo '74 revitalization, local runner Don Kardong created the Bloomsday Run. Supported by sponsors and the city, Bloomsday’s first event drew over a thousand participants and quickly gained national recognition.
In the years since, Bloomsday has evolved, yet stayed true to its inclusive nature, welcoming athletes at all levels. Bloomsday also selects a yearly Charity of Choice, reflecting its commitment to positive change and making a lasting impact beyond race day.
This year, on Sunday, May 4, Bloomsday participants will embark on a memorable 7.46-mile journey through Spokane's scenic streets. The course, known for its challenging, engaging terrain, offers a unique perspective on local landmarks, creating an experience designed for runners and walkers of all abilities. From seasoned athletes to those simply seeking a fun and active community experience, Bloomsday welcomes everyone to enjoy a cherished event showcasing the Lilac City in full bloom.
Don’t miss the pre-race festivities at the Bloomsday Trade Show held May 2nd and 3rd. Offering more than race packet pickup, the trade show is an annual community hub and a meeting point for participants, sponsors, and fitness enthusiasts of all kinds. Held at the Spokane Convention Center, the trade show highlights the latest in running gear, wellness products, and community services. Beyond a marketplace, the trade show fosters a strong sense of community engagement; the Spokane area looks forward to each year, where locals and visitors can connect in a shared passion for an active lifestyle, learn about cutting-edge fitness technologies, and discover resources that promote overall well-being.
In addition to the big race day, Bloomsday fosters a love for fitness early in life with events like Jr. Bloomsday for 3rd-7th graders, offering a fun course and prize pack to encourage teamwork and perseverance. The family-friendly Marmot March, a 1-mile walk/run for kids in third grade and younger, takes place at Riverfront Park on May 3rd. Families can participate together, and young participants receive fun treats, prizes, and admission to Mobius Discovery Center, promoting active fun for the whole family.
Now in its 49th year, Bloomsday continues to be a celebrated Spokane tradition and symbol of spring. Participation supports the enduring spirit of Spokane and the Lilac Bloomsday Association's mission to promote sports competition and fitness education for the betterment of the public.
