Elevating spaces from Spokane to the Northwest and beyond

Founded during the 2010 economic recession, HDG emerged from humble beginnings. “We had to scrape together any odd project we could find, and our margins were slim to none,” reflects founder Josh Hissong. “What we sacrificed in profit, we gained in experience.”

Josh, a North Idaho native, discovered a passion for design early in life. After years of designing, managing, and owning seven restaurants, he saw an opportunity to support other business owners through hospitality design. He began designing restaurants and commercial kitchens in 2006. Then in 2011, partnering with architect Armando Hurtado, he began to study all facets of architecture and design.

Headquartered in Spokane, HDG is now licensed in 10 states, including Idaho, Washington, Montana, Oregon, Hawaii, California, and New York. The firm offers comprehensive architecture, design, and branding services—“really anything that will help a project stay cohesive from start to finish,” says Josh. Their use of advanced design software and VR walk-throughs allows clients to experience their spaces before construction even begins. “This allows them to see and get a feel for every element within the design,” he affirms.

Josh credits HDG’s growth to its strong culture and creative team. “My co-workers are incredible at their roles, and all play a part in the growth and success of the firm and its subsidiary companies.” He’s built a business environment that’s fun, inspiring, and built on bold decisions. His mindset? Jump without a parachute—seize the moment, even if the path isn’t clear.

HDG has developed strong ties with top-tier contractors across the Inland Northwest and handles projects of all scales. “It does not matter if it is a $30 million home, a five-story mixed-use building, or a little renovation bringing an old home back to life,” shares Josh. “We love it all — and it all matters.”

The team recently launched a sister company, Stroom Interiors, which Josh runs alongside Aubrey Plaisance. Stroom allows HDG to manage in-house interior design, procurement, and delivery, keeping creative control and execution seamless for clients.

Josh’s passion extends well beyond the studio. He spends four to six weeks each year traveling across Europe to study centuries-old design and gather inspiration. “When most people are at the lake in the summer, I am working. When I want to relax at night, I read design books, magazines, and blogs,” he notes. “Inspiration is everywhere!”

At home, Josh is an active community contributor. He’s supported numerous nonprofits with both time and money, has served on several local boards, and currently hosts the podcast If Not Now, When?, which sparks meaningful dialogue about Spokane’s future. Notable guests include Adam Morrison, Jesse Walters, Chandler Baird of Spokane Eats, Mike Senske, and former Mayor David Condon.

HDG’s influence continues to grow through social media and design publications, reaching clients who often give the firm full creative freedom. Yet the approach to growth has remained grounded. “We don’t chase every lead, and we know we’re not a good fit for every project,” Josh explains. “We are very up front with potential customers about whether we think we’re a good match. We believe authenticity gives us freedom and is in everyone’s best interest.”

At its heart, HDG is about helping people live better by design. “Creating something out of nothing but a notion and helping people learn to live a different, simpler, and more fulfilled life,” says Josh, is what makes it all worthwhile.
